From EDITOR back to REPORTER: El Paso Times Editor goes ROGUE to Report Voting SURGE!! (?)

The El Paso Times Editor Bob Moore has decided to go “reporter” and he personally posted an article he wrote for the newspaper. Awwww how special!

He calls the 2012 Early Vote a “surge” in his headline: “Early voting surges 47%: Democratic congressional primary draws the most attention”.  Que cute!

I mean really, where was he in 2008 when the TSUNAMI hit El Paso the election year that the “PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY” reported a RECORD Democratic turn-out and there was MINIMAL REPUBLICAN crossover vote.  Why?  Because the R’s were in their own McCain Primary, happily awaiting ringside for the Demo’s to duke it out and determine who would finally be the Democratic Nominee for President.  The 2008 Primary Election in Texas was not just a SURGE it was a literal Tsunami not just here in El Paso but across the nation (do you remember that election Bob?  Have you ever voted in a Democratic Primary?).

I was uniquely involved in that campaign as I was the first Latina in the state (the first elected official in the state and I believe the first Latino elected official in the nation) endorsing President Barack Obama (then just a US Senator and candidate for president).  It was a tough place to be considering that El Paso, Texas, the largest international Border City with Mexico in the nation, is/was a CLINTON TOWN!!

Precinct Conventions in every precinct in El Paso reported real SURGES in voter turnout where dozens of people, in fact some precincts recorded over 100 participants (as was my personal Precinct), in Precincts where normally 1 or 2 people show up at the Precinct Convention. So this year’s turnout is to be expected and not really a SURGE from last year.  And this SURGE in voter turnout is not headline” news Bob, it is very common.  It is what political consultants distinguish between turnout for a “gubernatorial” year or “presidential” year and consultants adjust projections based on these very different Primary years.  These are simple terms Bob you should learn for next Primary when it will be a “gubernatorial” year and a substantially lower voter turnout year.

I don’t know that I like your “rogue” methods going from “Editor” and back to “reporter” in this particular election.  It doesn’t speak well of your reporters and may cause readers to see this as your lack of trust of their journalistic capacity. Or it can be interpreted as your reporter’s “mutiny” to your rogue methods of serving as managing editor and injecting yourself as “reporter for the day” when you see fit. It is very interesting to watch and read, to say the least.

I don’t recall Tom Fenton, Don Flores or Chris Lopez as “Editors” EVER writing a story in the El Paso Times as the “reporter” much less a story in a partisan political race.  You have clearly demonstrated your insistence of putting tabloid reporting methods first in order to sell newspapers and you have demonstrated your lack of neutrality in the 16th Congressional race.  This is very unfortunate for your readership but I am sure you will have your colleagues nominate you for awards to cover your very exposed nalgas!

And did any of the prior El Paso Times reporters "facebook" like crazy and even argue with readers who questioned his impartiality or methods? In fact, did any of them argue with posters on the EPT's comment secion, who had to correct his factual errors? Did any of the prior three gentleman you cited, rely on blogs (you know "that" blogger who thinks he's a reporter and forgets he owes child support) for his source? Matter of fact, editor Bob Moore is also quite active on the blog comment section. Ms. Norma, you know this stuff better than I do, do the editors of the Austin Statesman, the Denver Post, the Dallas Star Telegram or the Houston Chronicle exhibit similar behavior? For that matter, do they do the same thing at the Enquirer? I don't think even Perez-Hilton argues with his blog's commenters.

Your comments about Mr. Bob Moore's "social media" skills is appropriate. I have not read or seen an Editor of a major newspaper in Texas do what Moore does. He delete's messages, posts completely biased opinion in a combative way to put down readers of the El Paso Times because they have a differing opinion.

In addition, instead of engaging readers in a positive way to build readership, he instead is curt and turns them off if their opinion contrasts his. Very, very unprofessional. I have seen Evan Smith, the Editor for the Texas Tribune utilize social media very carefully.

I guess he is preparing for his future in the private sector? Beats me! I think he wants to create a TMZ or National Inquirer type of newspaper, probably because readership and revenues is at an all time low.

Example of what I speak of-- and the logical fallacies exhibited by the managing editor of the major newspaper of one of the 20 largest cities in the country is just priceless... it is a jewel for students of journalism and ethics even at the high school level... but to and example of Mr. Moore's strange referring of the congressional primary race (now he excoriates the Reyes campaign for running a poor campaign vs. Baytoe's "good campaign" and arguing with a FB "friend" who questions if the turnout is the result of the EPT's red meat baiting... oh and note the psychological red meat he throws out there by mentioning that voters are tired of corruption and want change and tying it to the "old direction" (read: Reyes)... that man is sneaky! Ok, here it is.

Bob Moore With what? Driving increased turnout? Perhaps a bit. But I think there are a lot of things at play. The expectation of the electorate has changed in recent years. They're tired of the old direction. I think the corruption scandals have a lot to do with it. O'Rourke has run a very good campaign, a la Cook in 2005. Reyes, by contrast, has run a poor campaign. They spent $500,000 in 2011, with nothing to show for it. That money could have been decisive this year. But the campaign picked up lots of bad habits over the years.

Bob Moore But losing candidates and their supporters have a habit of looking outward, rather than inward, for explanation. So I'm sure you'll hear some finger-pointing at the Times if Reyes loses. And this criticism will come from people who were saying days earlier that no one believes the Times. And they will not understand the irony.

I think he needs to apologize to the Tiguas as well for wearing that Ysleta High School Indian headdress, as he is neither from the Lower Valley nor did he go to Ysleta.

I simply cannot find words to express my disgust at the photograph of El Paso Times editor, Robert Moore. I'd prefer to think that you "photoshopped" it, because I simply cannot believe an editor of a newspaper in a large, diverse city like El Paso would be so racially/ethnically insensitive to pose for such an insulting and ignorant picture. I can't even imagine what the Tigua Pueblo del Sur Nation would think about this. He may as well don a sarape and continue his smut against Reyes because this picture just reveals what this panzon thinks of his community: not very much.

No mam, I did NOT photo shop the photo. I got it from his very own Facebook photos, but cropped out the other gentleman in the photo with him as I did not know who he was. The photo was making the rounds on various Facebook walls and a lot of Native Americans I know were offended. I don't know what he was trying to project?

He is behaving like a modern day Onate, and Lord knows we have enough of them in El Paso.
