ADRIAN PEREZ: Frontera Bugalu’s Harpist, Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo Native Son

In my "out and about" stage of creative exploration, I have developed a great admiration and respect for a lot of local bands and musicians especially “Frontera Bugalu”.  It is one of the first original music bands I heard (post elected office) and have been supporting them ever since.  I have known some of the musicians and their previous musical acts for many years, but this band is an electrical, roots based, Latino influenced band that has a pretty amazing stage presence and their self-titled debut CD, has songs that stay in your head.

In Frontera Bugalu's creative mixture of talent is Adrian Perez, harpist for the band.

Adrian Perez is a 22 year old card carrying Native American. Many of his fellow band members did not know this fact but after sipping a few tequila shots at my house in Austin with the band and friends of the band, those who did not know, learned that Adrian is a member of the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo (Tigua) tribe here in El Paso. Part of the artwork hanging in the house, is Native American art, and I have several Tigua art pieces I have collected over the years that he recognized.  In a very subtle and non-assuming way, he motioned to artwork on the wall and stated it was “Tigua”.  I answered “yes, it is. You know the art origins because you are Tigua”. Adrian pulled out his federal Native American ID card and shared it with the group.

It was down time for the band as everyone was feeling accomplished about a very strong performance and final gig of the “mini Texas tour” for the after party show in Austin, Texas. Frontera Bugalu played at the SXSW Film Festival reveal of a film by local guitar genius and filmmaker Omar Rodriguez Lopez. Adrian was one of the band members who crammed a three day gig starting in Marfa and ending in Austin.  He clearly has the most sensitive instrument, the harp, and travel with the instrument I assume is a delicate task.  In fact in 24 hours, from the gig in San Antonio to Austin, he discovered a few “dings” in his treasured harp and he had a knob that tunes a string, break.  Although, visibly concerned, he is mild mannered and extremely respectful and simply stated he only needed some “super glue” and he could do a temporary fix for the gig.   He didn’t complain, whimper, or sulk.  In true musicianship form, he fixed the problem so he could perform!

Adrian Perez, is a multi-instrument classical guitarist.  He started playing at 7 years old with whom he calls a classical guitar maestro named “Domingo” a Mexican national from Mexico City.  At that young age, he concurrently played with a relative of “Domingo” named “Joseph” (a music student at Berklee College of Music in Boston) whom Adrian learned rock and blues guitar.  His interest in music continued and at 13 years, he was studying James Clarkston style guitar (that blends Flamenco with classical guitar), and he joined his first mariachi group at Valley View Middle School.

When Mariachi Vargas came to El Paso Adrian says he was taken by the harpist, and bugged him about showing him some exercises.  Shortly after, his father (a guitar aficionado and musician) bought Adrian a harp.

He started attending music conferences and at the Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference, he met his “mentor, teacher, friend” Sergio Alonzo who plays with the “Mariachi Camperos De Nati Cano” one of the 3 top mariachi groups in the world.  (Mariach Camperos De Nati Cano are Grammy Award winners and the mariachi group that collaborated on Linda Ronstadt’s “Canciones de Mi Padre” recording). He studied with “Checo” during Spring break, Christmas break and summers and has utilized the mentorship and studies to advance his playing.  Because of him he says, Adrian has been influenced to teach the tradition and Checo's sessions have greatly influenced his public performance.

At 18 years old, he says he was fortunate and honored to perform as a substitute for Checo with Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano. After that, he was invited to audition for “Mariachi Sol De Mexico” and he is a musician that is “called up” regularly to perform with other groups across the country.

In January of 2011, he started to play with “Frontera Bugalu” which he calls “more of a pop culture, Mexican-Latino roots group”.

Tonight (May 6,2012), he performs in the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo tribes newest
entertainment venture, Socorro Entertainment CenterFrontera Bugalu opens for multi-Platinum record, Grammy and Latin Grammy Award Winners, “Calle 13”, for the general public and tribal members and their families!

His parents are Jesus and Virginia Perez and he has a younger sister Kristina and younger brother John Paul. His family members include political leaders of the tribe including 2 former Governors of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo including his uncles, former Governor Art Sinclair and David Sinclair served on Tribal Council (Adrian's mother is their sister).  His cousin former Governor Albert Alvidrez, served as Governor of the tribe during the time they had Indian Gaming on the Reservation. All of them are supportive of the young and talented Adrian Perez and his musical career.  His father played trumpet and guitar in a band, influencing the young Adrian.  Although capable of playing multiple instruments, his focus now is on the harp.

He has incredible stage presence and is a gifted musician to watch.  Make sure to keep an eye out on any performance by “Frontera Bugalu”.  Tonight we watch the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo Native son, perform on tribal land.

"DOS PAJARITOS CANTANDO"

"Pio, Pio, Pio, Pio"

(You read it hear first) "DOS PAJARITOS CANTANDO" will be a regular post about what people are saying and doing out in the field....""two canaries singing" ;-) because in El Paso - THEY DO!! Big Big Big news, is El Paso's Mike Apodaca will be the 2012 Texas Field Director for Obama for America (OFA). Congratulations Mike!!  Mike has a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science from UTEP he is the immediate past SDEC member for El Paso, Former President of the University Democrats at UTEP, Former Texas Young Democrats President and Former Deputy Field Director of OFA.  He is currently the PAC Treasurer of both the El Paso Young Democrats and Texas Young Democrats and has helped numerous elected officials in their elections or re-elections (including yours truly).  He is respected in Democratic circles throughout Texas and El Paso.  The Obama Campaign will have an El Pasoan lead the Texas Field Operations which likely means he will be moving to Austin and traveling throughout the state for the campaign.  An excellent opportunity for the young leader and outstanding choice by the Obama Campaign...........heard that Jaime Barceleau, the non-profit "go to person" in El Paso is gearing up to run for City Representative OR Mayor........he lives in City Representative Emma Acosta's District and has helped a lot of local poli's get elected. He is a credible candidate, with political allies (who?...tell you later), capacity to raise money, and is the beau of District Clerk Norma Favela..............At the county, County Commissioner Willie Gandara Jr., was seen fast and furious with some of his elves putting up signs in the Lower Valley, disputing the rumors that he is going to drop out of the race.  The corral of horses running for the open seat for House District 75 includes Commissioner Gandara, Hector Enriquez, Art Fierro, and Austin Democratic favorite Mary Gonzalez.  The filing deadline will reopen once the District Court in San Antonio provides guidelines and so it is possible that more horses will join the race, (don't be surprised if another female files)............County Judge Veronica Escobar is rumored to be headed to San Antonio for the Redistricting hearing to be held February 14th and 15th.  She has been a vocal supporter, in fact a formal campaign figure head of former City Rep. Robert "Beto" O'Rourke's Campaign to unseat  Congressman Silvestre Reyes, the 8 term incumbent.  Escobar has provided overwhelming public comment supporting the Republican drawn maps that benefit O'Rourke with precincts in the Northeast being included in the 16th Congressional District that remove most of the Lower Valley out of El Paso's congressional seat......various maps take precincts as far as the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo Reservation in Ysleta to Socorro, and further East communities of interest out of having an El Pasoan represent them in Congress, and some proposed maps place Horizon and East El Paso in the 23rd Congressional District represented by a San Antonio congressman......Lawyers for all interested parties are hammering out an agreement so that the delayed Primaries can be scheduled.  Will be interesting to see what her role and position will be in San Antonio and whether she will continue to grandstand against Democratic interests and enhanced Latino voter capacity.   Both Escobar and O'Rourke have openly supported the map that removes the Lower Valley from Congressional District 16. Neither has commented on the impact to Violations of the Voting Rights Act and current efforts to protect and preserve the Lower Valley precincts in El Paso. (Sigue "dos pajaritos cantando"..........)

BLOG SCOOP!! Redistricting Back Door Meetings Over the Weekend between Attorney General Greg Abbott's Office, MALDEF and The Mexican American Legislative Caucus

Blogging is not journalism in any form or fashion. It is an information medium that has been around for some time now used by political pundits, traditional media outlets, businesses, talk hosts, groups, organizations, and just private citizens in order to get a message or information out to the public.  It is an interesting medium because all sorts of information starts pouring in to a blogger about people, their records (public and otherwise), political groups, or events that did or did not happen and so a blogger has to really sort through the information not because we are a news source but because of credibility and liability.

Today I received a “blog scoop” about behind closed door meetings that were held over the weekend between representatives of Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, Jose Garza representing the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC) and Nina Perales representing the Mexican American Legal Defense Education Fund (MALDEF) in the Texas Redistricting Case.  On Friday, judges called upon the political parties and all interested parties to come to an agreement or risk the potential of split Primaries or a delayed Primary Date beyond April 3, 2012.

According to sources, the closed meeting included some Texas “bigs” including Attorney General Greg Abbott’s office as well as Jose Garza from MALC and Nina Perales from MALDEF but excluded many other players impacted by a final ruling and or agreement.  Sources have said that Rolando Rios from San Antonio representing Congressman Henry Cuellar was left out of the talks as well as attorneys representing the NAACP (who were initially invited but walked away from the table).

The closed door meetings that led to an agreement are said to have included awarding Maverick County to the 28th Congressional District represented by Congressman Henry Cuellar.  The other “rumored” deal is the awarding of the Lower Valley area in El Paso County including Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo land holds, Socorro and East of Socorro areas to the 23rd Congressional District represented by Congressman Canseco.  This proposal would make the district more Democratic and a better seat for Congressional candidate Pete Gallego, a good thing!  This rumored deal between the Attorney General’s office and attorneys for MALC and MALDEF is at the expense of the 16th Congressional District represented by Congressman Silvestre Reyes.

Both MALDEF and MALC have long standing relationships with State Representative Pete Gallego, who has served as Chair of MALC and has provided 18 plus years of input to MALDEF on a wide variety of legislative issues pending in the Texas legislature and he also has served as a resource to MALDEF on other redistricting matters.

If the two groups did not consult with others, including those representing the interest of the 16th Congressional District or Congressman Reyes, or attorneys representing the interests of South Texas, it posses a breach of political protocol among Latinos in Texas.

I will keep you posted as I get more information.
